PHARR – The number of people who are in need of food during the summer skyrocketed to about 62,000 people per week.

The Rio Grande Valley Food Bank manager of grants and advocacy Omar Rodriguez says the cause of the increase in numbers is simple – school is out for the summer.

“A lot of children and their families rely on the free or reduced lunch and breakfast at school; and now that they're not going to have that for the next three months, you're going to see a lot of families struggling to put quality food on the table,” said Rodriguez.

According to the RGV Food Bank, on average a parent will spend around $300 per child per month on food.

Add on utility bills which usually increase because of the extra use, while trying to save for the end of summer to prepare their children for the upcoming school year.
