A man was arrested and accused of posing as a home health provider and tricking an ambulance company based in the Rio Grande Valley to help him with his human smuggling scheme, according to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Jesus Cantu-Treviño was arrested by the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit of the Texas Office of the Attorney General and the Department of Homeland Security in Edinburg. He faces a charge of conspiracy to commit human smuggling, according to a Thursday news release from Paxton’s office.

According to the release, Cantu-Treviño orchestrated a scheme involving a fictitious assisted living facility as a front, and used Skyline EMS ambulances to illegally transport individuals past U.S. border checkpoints.

Channel 5 News reached out to Skyline EMS for comment on Cantu-Treviño’s arrest.

In a statement, Skyline EMS Chief Operations Officer Johnny Cordero said they were not aware of Cantu’s alleged scheme.

Cantu-Treviño approached Skyline EMS as a home health provider seeking medical transport for his clients from Peñitas to a facility in Alice, the release stated.

“Skyline EMS was an unknowing participant and was in no way aware of what Mr. Cantu’s intentions or scheme or his daily business practice,” the release stated. “To Skyline EMS everything looked correct…we were not aware of the immigration status of any of his patients.”
