Los Indios tackling traffic congestion caused by transmigrantes

Those driving through Military Highway in Los Indios have encountered the traffic caused by transmigrantes as they take used vehicles south of the border to be sold there.
It’s a sight that usually occurs this time of year, and the transmigrantes must go through the Los Indios Port of Entry with the vehicles.
Several transmigrantes told Channel 5 News they’ve been stuck in traffic for days. Officers with the Los Indios Police Department break up the line of traffic that forms along Highway 509, and make the transmigrantes go back to waiting areas.
The transmigrante permits are processed by customs staff at the international bridge.
"Everybody has to follow the law, the transmigrantes particularly,” Los Indios City Manager Jared Hockema said.
According to Hockema, the traffic control keeps the roadways safe. Hockema said the city often deals with transmigrantes attempting to park and sleep along the road.
“Our officers are working overtime. We invest over 15 thousand dollars a month in overtime during these peak periods of time,” Hockema said. “We put up barricades, and we've been trying to work with our state partners to try to mitigate this on the areas coming into town. It's not just here in Los Indios, it’s on the roads leading into town — and it creates a serious traffic hazard at times."
The city is working with Cameron County and the Texas Department of Transportation to put up more signs to prohibit parking on the right of way.
Transmigrantes lining up said they hope officials can find a way to speed things up.
Officials said they expect the line of transmigrantes to continue on Friday, as many of them who were in line were not processed on Thursday.
