Fireworks ban in effect in Starr County amid dry conditions
Firefighters in Starr County are facing dry conditions ahead of New Years. That was one reason for the county's ban of some fireworks this year.
Starr County has made it illegal to sell or use fireworks that shoot up in the air and explode. Commissioners say dry conditions are to blame, and the Starr County burn ban continues.
So fireworks considered skyrockets with sticks and missiles with fins are banned.
Some volunteer firefighters are standing by on Christmas. They say they've been dealing with cigarette fires lately.
"A lot of people like to light those, especially around here next to tall grass. So that's one thing that we look out for especially," La Rosita Volunteer Fire Department firefighter Ryan Barrera said. "Right now, because of the conditions we have with the tall dry grass, the fire can spread extremely quickly."
Experts suggest keeping water nearby when lighting fireworks, keeping your kids away, not handling them when you light them and keeping away from the dry grass.
