SOUTH PADRE ISLAND – After a 28-year-old who drifted about a quarter mile offshore out of at South Padre Island was rescued last week, county officials are warning the public of rip currents.

The Cameron County Beach Patrol says this is the time of year rip currents get stronger and the rescues get more dangerous.

“The average surfer is going to have a lot of trouble. Even a professional rescuer is going to have trouble in the water in these conditions,” said Chief Art Hurtado with beach patrol.

It’s not only in the water people have to be careful. The jetties are also dangerous this time of year.
