The 43-year-old Edinburg man police say held his pregnant wife against her will and assaulted her over a period of six days did so after accusing her of being unfaithful, according to an affidavit obtained by Channel 5 News.

Jorge Luis Ramos was arrested on Dec. 3 after officers with the Edinburg Police Department responded to an apartment where they found his wife with “visible bruising and swelling to her face and cigarette burns on her body,” according to a news release.

An Edinburg police office said in the affidavit Ramos told police "everything was fine." Ramos also said a man had entered the residence and "did something to his wife."

The woman initially confirmed Ramos' story and said she didn't report the assault. The affidavit states that the 25-year-old woman later told police Ramos was the one who assaulted her.

The woman told police she was hit with multiple objects, including a hot frying pan, unopened bottles of beer, a package of frozen meat, and Ramos’ fists.

A news release previously identified the victim as Ramos’ girlfriend, but the affidavit and the judge who arraigned Ramos referred to the victim as Ramos’ wife.

According to the affidavit, the woman told police the assault started on Nov. 27 when Ramos accused her of being unfaithful, and lasted until police showed up at the apartment on Dec. 3.

The woman was four months pregnant, and she had previously informed Ramos she was pregnant with his child, the affidavit stated.

The woman had several injuries, the affidavit noted. They included both of her eyes and lips being severely bruised and swollen, a laceration on one of her eyes, a fractured nose, several bumps on her head and a scratch on her neck that she told police was from when Ramos held a knife against her throat and threatened to cut it.

Officers also found two burns on her neck and the back of her neck that the woman said were from Ramos turning off lit cigarettes on her body.

“[She] will further testify that Jorge grabbed a hot cooking pan from the kitchen area and struck her left thigh area as it was exposed due to her only wearing underwear,” an Edinburg police detective stated in the affidavit. “[The detective] will testify he observed [her] thigh to have been burned with imprinted words that read ‘stainless steel made in India.’”

On Dec. 3, Ramos soaked the woman in alcohol and grabbed a lighter, the affidavit stated. He then “proceeded to tell her he was going to burn her alive while she pleaded for him to not do it.”

Ramos was initially arraigned on Dec. 5 on a charge of aggravated assault.

On Monday, Ramos was arraigned on several new charges, including seven counts of assault of a pregnant person, three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, one charge of terroristic threat and one count of unlawful restraint.

The affidavit said Ramos denied the allegations as he was being placed under arrest. During his arraignment on Monday, he kept interrupting the judge as he read him his new charges.

“I don’t need to be here, I’m not guilty” Ramos said during the arraignment. “It’s all made up, that’s what it is."

A spokesperson for the Edinburg Police Department told Channel 5 News the woman was hospitalized in stable condition, and there was no harm to the baby.

Hidalgo County jail records show Ramos remains behind bars as of Wednesday night on a bond of $950,000.
