The Pecina family in La Feria spent their day starting over as they tried their best to salvage anything that wasn't destroyed floodwaters from Thursday’s thunderstorm.

The main road leading to their house in La Feria on Memorial Road flooded, leaving plenty of stalled cars in its path.

"When the water did kind of start coming in, I took towels, blankets, rugs — whatever I could to keep it from going in all our doors,” Raquel Pecina said. “The moment we noticed it just wasn't happening, then I decided to try and save what we could.”

At first the family tried to ride out the storm and save their home, but soon the water got too deep.

“Once the water really got to our ankles, my husband said ‘I think we should really get out of here,’” Raqule said. “We just got our phones, got some clothes."

The Pecina family said this area has flooded before in storms like Hurricane Dolly, but never to the point like this.

“It pretty much flooded inside homes… neighbors around here are getting four inches — there is a house back there that got eight or six inches of water,” Asael Pecina said.

Cameron County and La Feria city officials are urging the public to avoid flooded roads, and to report any storm damage online to the state.

As the Pecina family continues their efforts to clean up their home, they said they are counting their blessings that they made it safely through the storm.

"Thank God that we are still alive because we can always replace the stuff,” Raquel said.
