Georgia woman admits to smuggling firearms into Mexico through Brownsville port of entry
A Georgia woman has entered a guilty plea to smuggling several firearms and magazines through the Brownsville port of entry into Mexico, according to a news release from the office of U.S. Attorney Nicolas J. Ganjei.
According to the news release, on Dec. 15, 2024, 38-year-old Mirna Luna traveled from her home in Canton, Georgia and attempted to cross into Mexico from the Brownsville/Matamoros port of entry.
Luna was referred to a secondary inspection, where authorities discovered 17 firearms and 27 magazines hidden in the gas tank of the Nissan car she was driving, according to the news release.
The news release said Luna claimed ownership of the vehicle and admitted she is the only person who drives it.
Luna's guilty plea was accepted by a U.S. district judge, and her sentencing has been scheduled for July 8. She faces a maximum of 10 years in federal prison and a $250,000 maximum possible fine, according to the news release.
She will remain in custody pending her sentencing.
