New rules will be in place for the November election at polling locations in the city of Mission.

A newly approved ordinance adds regulations for electioneering — campaigning outside the polls during elections.

While the ordinance still allows for one four by eight, two four by four, and three yard signs per candidate or political action committee near the polling location, any additional signs or flags must now be hand held or attached to a tent.

Each candidate, or PAC, will be only allowed to have one 10 by 10 canopy per polling location.

Mission City Secretary Ana Carillo said a lot of the changes stem from complaints of damaged grass on people's property. It's also the reason the city is no longer allowing barbecues during electioneering.

Hidalgo County Democratic Chairman Richard Gonzales said he understands the ordinance is in the community's best interest.

Channel Five News also reached out to the Hidalgo County Republican Party for comment on the changes, but they didn’t respond as of Tuesday night.
