A man is in custody after barricading himself in a Weslaco home during a standoff with police.

The suspect, whose name was not released by authorities, was identified by Weslaco Police Chief Joel Rivera as a Vallejo gang member with a "lengthy" criminal history.

Channel 5 News cameras were rolling as several officers with the Weslaco Police Department and other law enforcement agents surrounded a home at the corner of Anacua and Abilene streets.

Rivera said police arrived at the scene Tuesday at around 7 p.m. in response to reports of a man driving around the neighborhood in a truck with a long rifle.

According to Rivera, a resident in the neighborhood told police they were shot at by the suspect.

The suspect fled to his home and barricaded himself there. Two women who were already at the home when the suspect arrived were able to escape, Rivera said.

The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office SWAT team made their way into the house at around 10:50 p.m. and detained the suspect after negotiations failed.

The suspect is expected to be arraigned on Wednesday, Feb. 21 on multiple charges, Rivera said, adding that the truck the suspect drove had been stolen in Donna on Monday night.

While speaking to the media following the suspect's arrest, Rivera said there is no reason to believe the community is in danger as this was an isolated incident.
