Valley health insurance agent discusses Medicare open enrollment deadline
The deadline for people with Medicare to make changes to their health insurance coverage is Saturday, Dec. 7.
One health insurance agent told Channel 5 News some companies change their coverage every year.
“There are some plans that they basically expire, so basically what happens is that they're placed on another plan even if they don't choose that plan,” Hector Calderon with the Insurance Advisors Agency said.
To avoid headaches and hold-ups at the doctor's office, Calderon recommends people review their current health needs —such as hearing aids, added dental and vision coverage.
Another thing to consider, Calderon said, is cost.
“We do basically add an application called the Medicaid Savings Program where they can qualify for plans that are free,” Calderon said.
People over the age of 65 on a fixed income could qualify to lower the insurance costs associated with Medicare.
For those under the age of 65, open-enrollment under the Affordable Care Act Marketplace ends on Sunday, Dec. 15.
DACA recipients can now qualify to buy health insurance.
