The United States Postal Service announced certain local mail processing operations will remain at the McAllen postal facility, according to a Tuesday news release.

As a result, mail that is collected in McAllen and destined to another address in the area would not leave the region for processing, the news release stated.

USPS previously discussed potential plans to shift local originating mail processing operations from McAllen to the San Antonio Processing and Distribution Center starting in 2025.

According to the release, USPS will not go through those plans due to a “proposed operational strategy aimed at increasing efficiency, improving service quality, and saving USPS an additional $3 billion per-year nationwide.”

In May, USPS announced plans to invest up to $12 million to the McAllen facility to expand and streamline package and mail processing and distribution capabilities.

“Once the McAllen facility becomes a local processing center, it is expected to handle package mailing and shipping, letters, and flats,” the news release stated. “The LPC is also expected to offer express services and accept bulk and permit mail, further improving its delivery services.”

With the decision to keep mail processing operations at the McAllen facility, there would be no anticipated employee impacts, the release added.
