The community surrounding the Howling Trails Golf Course is a quiet one. Those living in the area say they enjoy living right next to their hobby.

“We have six 55-year-old plus communities around this golf course,” golfer BJ Dennis said.

Dennis and other residents told Channel 5 News they’re worried about the future of the golf course.

The La Joya Independent School District owns the golf course, and previously announced plans to sell it after saying it was getting too expensive to maintain it.

The property is lined with homes full of people who moved here just to call the golf course home. Residents said they’re worried what a sale of the golf course would mean for the community.

“I moved to the Valley to play golf year round, it's the reason I retired down here,” Jack Payne said. “If you take it away, I’m moving.”

The district signed a contract to purchase the golf course from its previous owners — Martin Valley Ranches Inc. — in 2014.

As part of the contract, the property must remain a golf course for another 25 years. Ten more years remain in the contract.

In a statement to Channel 5 News, the district said they're working with legal and real estate experts to sell the course without violating their contract.

“Maintaining the golf course has become increasingly costly, creating a financial strain on the district and diverting funds that could better support educational programs and student services,”  the district said in the statement.

The golfers said they want what's best for the school community and also for their homes.

“If they take it away from us, we're in trouble,” Payne said.
