A Weslaco family of six lost their home and all their belongings in a fire that destroyed a house they had lived in for nearly 40 years.

The Monday fire destroyed the home on Flores Street near Sugarcane Drive.

What's left of the home is a giant hole in the roof, destroyed furniture, and a collapsed section of the garage.

Ruby Cano, her husband, three kids, and her mother had called the house home for nearly 40 years.

Cano said she had just picked up her daughter from school when she noticed black smoke coming from her street.

"When I was driving in from work, from the street, I saw the big black cloud from the back,” Cano said. “I told my daughter, ‘I think our house is burning,’ and sure enough, I drove faster.”

Cano said her first thought was her family.

"My mom and the house — a million things were going through my head. Luckily, my mom was at her doctor's appointment," Cano said.

The family was not home when the fire started.

"I have no words to describe it. This is our safe place," Cano said.

Cano said she is thankful no one was hurt.

"I am blessed, and I can't thank God enough that I still have my mom," Cano said.

The family is currently staying with relatives. The Hidalgo County Fire Marshal is still investigating the cause of the fire.
