On Tuesday, Channel 5 News reported that over 950 animals have been euthanized since February at the Harlingen Animal Shelter.

Channel 5 News is taking a closer look at the data.

The city took in 1,536 animals after taking over the shelter from the RGV Humane Society in February.

Of those animals, 953 were euthanized between February and September 2024.

Data provided to Channel 5 News showed that only 19% of the animals the shelter had in February ended up getting adopted within that same eight-month period.

During a Sept. 18 city council meeting, Harlingen Mayor Norma Sepulveda said distemper was a factor in why some animals were put down.

According to the documents, of the 953 animals put down, only 24 had been euthanized for distemper.

Data showed 43% of the animals, or 406 animals, were euthanized for “medical-other.” One hundred eleven animals were put down due to aggression toward humans, 79 animals were put down due to an upper respiratory infection, and 76 of the animals were put down due to space issues, data shows.

Channel 5 News is still analyzing the data provided by the shelter.
