Weslaco city leaders are planning a new fire station to keep up with growing construction on the north side of the city.

More building permits are being approved as the area expands, Weslaco Mayor Adrian Gonzalez said, and city leaders want safety infrastructure to match.

"A lot of growth is going to the northwest area," Gonzalez said.

City commissioners approved design drawings last week for a new station near the corner of Westgate and Sugarcane drives.

"With all of this growth that's coming in, we need to start planning a fire station," Gonzalez said.

The project is estimated to cost more than $5 million. Funding will come from a $30 million bond commissioners approved in 2023.

"So now the design is finished; now we go out for bids for construction," Gonzalez said.

Mayor Gonzalez said those talks started three years ago. The project is expected to be completed by summer 2027.
