Overweight trucks to be rerouted in Brownsville over road repairs
A detour to some much needed road repairs in Brownsville will add several minutes to the commute of all overweight trucks weighing over 80 thousand pounds.
Starting on Monday, Oct. 14, trucks will need to go around a stretch of International Boulevard between I-69E and Boca Chica Boulevard.
“This really is about easing congestion, a little bit,” Ray Pedraza, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Transportation said.
In January, TxDOT reduced International Boulevard to one lane in either direction. Since then, they've worked on removing the asphalt and replacing it with concrete as part of a two year, $20 million improvement project.
“We're upgrading the pavement from asphalt to concrete to be able to withstand heavier loads,” Pedraza said.
Police will start enforcing the detour on Monday.
Crews are also working on upgrading the storm sewer system, and are adding sidewalks and new signage.
Because of current congestion, TxDOT is asking all overweight trucks over 80 thousand pounds to use a detour.
Trucks will have to take I-69E and FM 511 in order to avoid International Boulevard.
Construction is expected to complete in March 2026.
