An Edcouch man died after he was pulled out of the water at South Padre Island.

The incident occurred on Sunday, one mile north of County Beach Access No. 5. Cameron County Park Rangers were dispatched in reference to an unresponsive man, according to a news release.

The man was identified as 49-year-old Matthew Shaw. Responding park rangers and Cameron County Beach Patrol personnel immediately initiated life-saving measures.

According to the news release, witnesses said Shaw had gone out for a swim prior to the incident. Shaw was transported to Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville where he was pronounced dead.

The incident remains under investigation.
