Eight individuals joined the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2026.

The class includes Anyssa Olivarez Woods and Dr. Sonia Trevino, both from Mission, McAllen Memorial golf coach Celso Gonzalez, McAllen High girls soccer coach Patrick Arney, Joe Pena from PSJA, Pablo Almaguer from Weslaco, Robert Mangum from Edinburg and Toby Nivens from McAllen High.

Several teams were also honored. That includes five Brownsville Pace cross country teams, the 1991 La Villa and Mission state champion girls cross country teams and the 1986 Mercedes baseball team that finished as state runner-up.

Dr. Trevino played multiple sports at Mission High School, but it was volleyball that opened the door to play at the division one level with Florida State, receiving Metro-Conference All-Tournament and CoSIDA Academic All-District honors. She also led the Seminoles to two NCAA tournament appearances. Trevino credits her mom for all of her accomplishments.

"Her expectations have always been so high for us," Dr. Trevino said. "We still none of us know what our best is because she always challenged us to do better than your best, so that's the way it was. That's the way she was raised. It was a foundation of faith and a belief that you can do anything if you put your mind into it and with hard work."
