The city of Primera is getting a volunteer fire department due to the city's growth.

Currently, the Harlingen Fire Department is contracted to handle fire calls in Primera, but the contract ends next October.

So far, 20 people have already signed up to become volunteer firefighters.

"We're very grateful for the volunteers that have signed up. New volunteers are welcomed to come, we have trainings, no experience is needed. They will get the experienced and training they need to be a volunteer firefighter with this department," Public Works and Safety Director Albert Perez said.

City leaders say they will provide the gear and training for those volunteers to get their needed certification.
