A proposal from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection would add 25 miles of new lighting along the Rio Grande, some of which would end up in Starr County.

The agency says they need to be able to see better along the border at night. 

A map shows the lights in Starr County would be sprinkled throughout the bigger cities — such as La Grulla, Rio Grande City and Roma.

CBP is asking for public input on the project, which can be submitted online through Monday, April 22.

A group of environmental advocates is hoping this new border protection project doesn't go through.

“Starr County is one of the last places we should be blasting with lights, it's one the more rural places that does have dark night skies still,” Laiken Jordahl with the Center for Biological Diversity said. “With this new lighting it will further degrade and destroy habitat, confuse animals, interfere with hunting, interfere with pollination of plants."

The project could still move forward without public support, but CBP said they will take into consideration opinions on impact to wildlife or people who live in the area. 

An environmental assessment will also be conducted should the project move forward.
