Brownsville plaza fire destroys 12 offices, leaves business owners with total loss
A fire tore through Wellington Plaza in Brownsville off Price Road, destroying 12 offices and forcing multiple business owners to close up shop.
Channel 5 News crews could see pieces of the building scattered across the parking lot. Inside one of the suites, burnt debris covered the office space.
The fire call came in at about 9 p.m. Monday, and Brownsville Fire Department crews remained on scene Tuesday afternoon.
A spokesperson for the department said they believe the fire started in one office before spreading to the attic.
"Due to the conditions, they were unable to keep the fire contained to that one area," Brownsville Fire Department spokesman Hector Martinez said.
All 12 offices are considered a total loss.
Business owner Veronica Lozano spent more than a year building her business at the plaza.
"It's all gone, and we spent so much love and care creating it," Lozano said. "We lost everything, everything that was inside. The employees are left without jobs, and the people who needed treatment won't get it now.”
The fallout extended beyond business owners, as confused clients continued to arrive at the complex for pre-scheduled appointments.
"We just see a fire, smoke, and stuff, so we can't make it," Harlingen resident Bernard Harris said.
The city fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
