Brownsville, TX (KRGV) — Brownsville Independent School District is moving students from Raquel Peña Elementary School to Garcia Middle School after smoke from a nearby controlled brush burning got worse, according to the district.

Brownsville ISD is aware of controlled burning on property near the elementary school as part of ongoing land clearing activities.

On Thursday, campus administration noticed the smell of smoke entering the school. Administrators moved students to the cafeteria during dismissal so they could stay indoors while they waited to be picked up or board their bus.

Staff again detected the smell of smoke at the campus Friday morning. The fire department responded to the area and the controlled burn stopped for the day.

The district said parents who would like to pick up their child may do so at the middle school. They are asked to bring a valid ID and remain patient as staff work to safely reunite students with their parents or guardians. Early pickup due to this situation will not affect the student’s attendance.

Campus and district personnel will continue to monitor the situation and take any necessary precautions to ensure a safe environment for students and staff.
