La Grulla, TX (KRGV) — Grulla High School's Miguel Sanchez is known for his strong grades, leadership, and school spirit.

Sanchez is the senior class president and helps organize homecoming, prom, and pep rallies. He is also known for his energy at school events.

"They're really exciting; we're always really loud," Sanchez said. "We actually plan ahead of time to buy air horns, poppers, and train horns, and the train horns are the loudest."

Sanchez is ranked fourth in his class. He takes dual enrollment classes with South Texas College and has taken several AP classes, including Spanish, where he earned a 5, the highest grade possible.

“He's just very outspoken, and he has a lot of confidence in himself. Even though sometimes he doubts it, he knows he has it in him,” Grulla High School AP Spanish teacher Marisol Rios said. "That is a motivation for me as a teacher to keep inspiring students. I know he's going to be someone in life out there," Rios said.

Sanchez is also president of the National Honor Society and a member of the UTRGV Upward program. This past summer, he attended the National Student Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C.

"It's just something that not everybody gets to experience, so it was a big privilege and a big honor that my parents motivated me to go,” Sanchez said.

Sanchez said his parents and two brothers have helped shape who he is.

“They push me to try my best, especially my mom. She's always there for me," Sanchez said.

His interest in medicine started with watching Grey's Anatomy with his mom.

“I really wasn't into it until my mom; she would always be like, 'Oh, you should watch this show; this show is really good. It's about doctors and everything.' And I was like, 'Do I really want to watch a show about doctors when I don't want to be a doctor?' I wanted to be a lawyer then. I watched all the seasons over and over again. I repeated them like three times already,” Sanchez said.

Sanchez is already a certified phlebotomist and wants to keep pursuing his goal of becoming a fetal surgeon at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

“I want him to be able to explore. I want him to be able to meet new people, and for him to have all the opportunities that I never would have thought he would have. I want him to dream big and touch the stars,” Sanchez’s mom Cecilia Garza said.

This fall, Channel 5 News will be highlighting 10 students who shine in and out of the classroom.

The students have already been selected.
