Channel 5 News is proud to announce Javier Guerra as the new co-anchor for Channel 5 News This Morning.

Javier will be seen on the morning news desk alongside co-anchor Sandra Rodriguez and Meteorologist Cecilia Gutierrez starting on Monday, July 8.

Javier was raised in Rio Grande City, and previously served as the weekend evening anchor at KRIS 6 News in Corpus Christi before eventually becoming the morning anchor.

After four years in Corpus Christi, Javier said it was time to go back to the Rio Grande Valley.

“I’m excited to get back and reconnect with the community. Being home doing what I enjoy is truly a blessing and I am excited to connect with all four counties across the RGV,” Javier said. “The Valley is a unique place, unlike any other, and I am genuinely happy to be back and closer to family and friends.”

Javier will fill in for Trey Serna, who was the co-anchor of Channel 5 News This Morning for three years.

"First of all, we all are going to miss Trey and all the amazing job he did every morning to Channel 5 News This Morning. Yet, we are very excited to have Javier, who like Trey, is also a Valley native join us and be a part of our amazing morning team," Channel 5 News Director Zoltan Csanyi-Salcedo said. "Javier brings his experience having worked mornings in Corpus Christi along with his enthusiasm to be back home in the RGV.  So I know he will complement Cecilia and Sandra very well as part of the most watched morning news in the Valley."

As the new co-anchor for Channel 5 News This Morning, Javier said he’ll bring his passion, and years of experience to viewers. He will also continue Made in the 956, a series that spotlights the people in the Valley and businesses in the Valley.

“To me, being a journalist is about making a difference and helping others. I hope I can tell the stories of the Valley and keep you well-informed,” Guerra said.

As a foodie, Javier is inviting the public to send him restaurant recommendations, as well as news tips and story ideas, to javier@krgv.com.
