The UTRGV Vaqueros are coming off their first season in program history, and a major reason for their success was a defense that consistently made plays. As the team heads into year two, that unit is already showing signs of another strong campaign.

In 2025, the Vaqueros allowed just 18.8 points per game, quickly establishing themselves as one of the toughest defenses in the Southland Conference. Head coach Travis Bush believes that strength will continue, especially with the experience returning up front.

“The strength of our football team right now through spring," Coach Bush said of the defense. “All front seven are back, linebacker core is back, and we’re deep up front. They’ve been giving the offense fits all spring, which is good. We still feel like they’re going to be one of the top units in the conference.”

Rather than rebuilding, UTRGV is reloading on defense. The Vaqueros return nine starters, bringing back a core group that already understands how to execute at a high level together. That continuity has helped build both chemistry and confidence heading into the new season.

“Even better, the group as a whole nine returning starters leaves two spots for guys who didn’t start but were probably here,” Vaqueros defensive back TJ Neal said. “The brotherhood is there, and we’re playing for the guys next to us out of love. I think this year is going to be something special.”

Last season, the Vaqueros thrived on creating chaos. They finished with 12 interceptions and 14 forced fumbles, consistently shifting momentum in their favor and putting opposing offenses under pressure.

“We all played together, we were really sound,” linebacker Jaiden Haygood added. “All eleven guys flew to the ball on every play, and we were causing havoc whether it was in the backfield or getting pass breakups. There are many more games and opportunities this year to make plays, sacks, interceptions and we’re bringing back a lot of experience. The guys know what this conference is about. It’s hard-nosed football, and we’re ready to get to it.”

With added chemistry, growing confidence, and a full season of experience under their belts, expectations are rising for the Vaqueros defense. Heading into year two, UTRGV isn’t just looking to replicate last season’s success, they're aiming to elevate it.
