Talarico rallies RGV voters on affordable healthcare following Paxton visit
Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico is campaigning in the Rio Grande Valley, running for the seat currently held by Sen. John Cornyn.
Cornyn lost his bid for reelection in the Republican primary. Talarico will face Republican Ken Paxton on the November ballot. Whoever wins will take office next January.
Talarico's visit included a stop at The Tortilleria Factory in McAllen. He focused on affordable healthcare and immigration enforcement reform during his time in the Valley.
During a stop in Edinburg, Talarico met with Cynthia “Cindy” Banda, a McAllen woman diagnosed with stage two breast cancer.
To help pay for her treatments, Banda's family set up a GoFundMe page and is selling chicken plates.
"She has insurance, but it's still not enough, and so she is struggling like so many Texans to pay those bills," Talarico said. "We need policy reform. We need systemic reform so that we don't have to rely on plate sales like this. People like Cindy should be able to afford the healthcare that they need. And that's not happening in this country. And that's what we're running to fix."
