A man was arrested in connection with a 2023 deadly shooting in Brownsville.

The 19-year-old suspect was arrested in the 1800 block of East Tyler Street on Thursday. The unidentified suspect was 16 years old at the time of the shooting, according to a Brownsville Police Department spokesperson.

The shooting occurred in February 2023. Police responded in reference to a man with a gunshot wound. Martin Leal Longoria was taken to a local hospital and later died from his injuries.

A second suspect has already been arrested and charged in connection with the shooting. Jose David Garcia, who was 17 at the time, was charged with murder.

Cameron County District Attorney Luis V. Saenz said the shooting investigation concluded the 19-year-old suspect had fled to Mexico.

The suspect was arrested by the Brownsville Police Department, with assistance of the U.S. Marshals Service, the FBI and Border Patrol Special Response Team.

He was transferred to the Darrell Hester Juvenile Detention Center until he is processed and transferred out to be tried as an adult, according to the police spokesperson.

Saenz said the suspect will be charged with murder.
