Nearly 50 people protested outside the El Valle Detention Center in Raymondville on Saturday.

Activists and relatives of detainees called for the release of their undocumented loved ones and also for better conditions inside.

"The least we can do is be here for them, even if there are no words that will be enough to comfort them," Palmview resident Robert Hoffman said.

He doesn't know anyone detained at the center, but he says he was there because of his faith and humanity.

"If you're a Christian, you care about people and their treatment and their circumstances," Hoffman said.

Others who took part in the protest do have loved ones inside, and their circumstances are very different.

"Every Sunday we come and visit here. Every Sunday she's here, and I see her and she's staying strong, she's trying to stay strong, for the family, but I can see how hard it is on her." Rosaline Yanet said.

She says her 63-year-old grandmother, Xiomara Companiani Gonzalez, was detained in November of last year. The family travels every week from Portland, Texas, near Corpus Christi, to see her at the detention center.

The immigration activists who organized this protest say this is a reality for several undocumented families, as well as for those who've been following the legal process to obtain citizenship.

"We will continue to remind the community that they are not alone, that there's a whole community that stands behind them and that supports them and that will come and advocate for them," Blue Bunny Brigade community member Criselda Vega said.

Vega says they are also protesting for those who are afraid to show up.

"We sit there in living rooms and hear mothers crying because the breadwinner was taken and they have no way of knowing where their next meal will come and I have heard it directly from their mouths, please, go and be our voice because we can't," Vega said.

It is a voice that Hoffman says, he will continue to share for others.

"I'm angry about it enough to come out here, so they need the support, even if it is emotional support," Hoffman said. "And maybe some hope for the people inside that we're out here."
