People looking to walk late at night or during the early morning hours in Mission now have a better lit option.

Eighteen new solar-powered lights were installed at the CWV Park trail. The project cost $68,000.

The city said a portion of the bill was covered through a grant and paid the remainder through the city's Parkland Development Fund.

The fund collects fees as new homes and subdivisions are developed in the city. The lights also come with an eight-year, 100-percent warranty.

Mission Parks and Recreation Director Brad Benson said the city secured a 10-year maintenance guarantee at no additional cost.

"Part of my 10-year master plan for our parks department included the need for park trail lights," Benson said. "But this is a major accomplishment, believe me. We're really excited about it."

Benson said this is the 14th park in Mission with lighting, leaving only three remaining parks with unlit trails.

He said the city's long-term plan is to keep expanding trail lighting.

The new lights charge themselves during the day, which means no underground electrical wiring is needed and no electric bill to keep the half-mile trail lit.
