A knock on the door of the office of Take 5 Reporter Idani Cantu led to a surprise discovery.

A search for her name on the website of the Texas Comptroller’s Office led to $50 Cantu didn’t realize belonged to her.

“I was honestly surprised,” Cantu said. “It does sound like it would be something that is not real, so I was not sure.”

On Monday, Channel 5 News reported that the comptroller’s office is holding on to over $125 in unclaimed money that belongs to residents in the Rio Grande Valley.

Those wanting to check if they have any unclaimed money are urged to go to the Texas Unclaimed Property website and search the database by putting their name and address.

While $50 doesn’t sound like a lot, Cantu said it’s making a difference.

“It can be going toward the gifts for the kids, so that's like a little Christmas gift for us,” Cantu said.

A few doors down from Cantu’s office, KRGV-TV Creative Services Producer Martin Torres found $400.

“That’s a lot of money, especially for the holidays,” Torres said. “And the fact that it’s been sitting there since 2002, that’s crazy but also I’m glad I found it."

The biggest pot of gold was found in the Channel 5 News editors’ room. Technical director Neida Alcantar found $700 waiting for her.

“I’m shocked, it's actually good timing because of the holidays so I’m going to use this money very well",” Alcantar said.

Those needing help filing a claim can do so at a free event set for Thursday, Dec. 11 at the state comptroller’s office in McAllen, located at 200 S. 10th St. #301.

The event runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Staff will help those attending look up their name to see if they have any unclaimed money. Those hoping to attend will need a photo I.D.
