in the heart of downtown Mission, the historical Border Theatre has stood the test of time, keeping its doors open for the last 81 years.

"We had a vision to renovate it and keep it open to the community," Border Theatre owner Jose Alvarado said.

A vision that can now come to life for Alvarado.

"I feel emotional because it's been four years, right," Alvarado said. "I couldn't wait for a better moment than this, right?"

Mission, along with the Economic Development Council, announced they brought back the Downtown Assistance Program.

The historical Border Theatre was just one of six business that walked away with $25,000.

The program is funded through a portion of sales tax dollars from the city.

EDC Manager of Programs Brianna Casares says this is the first year since COVID that they were able to bring back support for small business.

"This is a newly revamped program. The Downtown Assistance Program was previously just facade facing, but business owners can apply. They have to be located on Conway, one block east or west. Not only work on the facade but for work on plumbing and flooring," Casares said.

Alvarado's first plan to use the money is getting to work on bringing back the lights on the iconic Border Theatre sign.

The first step in keeping the Border Theatre up and running for future generations to come.
