A Rio Grande City family lost their pets and belongings in a house fire last Friday and now worries about the future of their restaurant.

Smoke residue covers the inside of the Coutino family's home on the 1700 block of Aust Street. Most of their belongings have to be thrown out.

Rafael Coutino and his wife, Veronica, have lived in the home for 12 years. It's where they raised their family and celebrated major milestones.

"We had a lot of family gatherings here. Kids' graduation parties, birthday parties and gatherings. It's been a lot of memories," Veronica Coutino said.

Rio Grande City Fire Chief Manuel Muniz said the fire is believed to have started inside the laundry room.

"It might have been something else, maybe clothing that was on fire that lit up," Muniz said. "We cannot rule out an electrical fire yet."

The family wasn't home when the fire happened. They were two miles away wrapping up their day at work.

The couple owns Coutino's Burgers & More in Rio Grande City, and it's their only source of income.

"Everything is gone, everything that I worked for, memories... and my cats," Rafael Coutino said.

For now, the future of the restaurant is uncertain as they work to rebuild their lives.

Rafael and his wife are now staying with a family member in Pharr. If they don't find a place to rent in Rio Grande City this week, they may have to move to a different city and find a new job.

If the family has to relocate, they hope to reopen their restaurant in their new city.

"We might close it down for a bit and see what comes out after that, see what God gives us, and try the best out of everything, but I am trying not to close it," Rafael Coutino said. "But if it comes to that, we have to close it."

Muniz said the investigation will wrap up by the end of the week.

A GoFundMe was set up to help the family recover. Click here to donate.
