Brownsville is wrapping up a yearlong effort to reshape its downtown, and residents have one more week to weigh in on the city's downtown renaissance master plan.

The survey launched last year, and the city has since used community feedback to build a draft plan. It includes upgrades to Adams Street, improvements around the cathedral and Market Square, and a new parking garage.

Brownsville resident Gilberto Serna said he visits downtown every weekend and wants to see more parking options.

"It gets so crowded there, and it's so hard to find parking spots," Serna said.

The plan also looks at making Adams Street more pedestrian-friendly.

"Looking at the possibility of renovating that street to allow access for pedestrian traffic, table seating, having people congregate in that area, and also serving as a corridor to International Boulevard as well as UTRGV and TSC," Brownsville Downtown Revitalization Manager Allan Garces said.

The community also wants the city to add a trolley and a bike lane to Adams Street. The plan also calls for making alleyways near the cathedral and market square more walkable.

Garces said the survey made one thing clear: people want results fast.

"Based on the community feedback we received initially, the community wants to see actionable items now, and what those are include fixing some of our sidewalks in specific corners of downtown, addressing lighting issues, fixing our trash cans, and our benches," Garces said.

Once the plan is finalized, the city will begin looking for funding. The downtown manager said the full timeline could stretch 20 years.

Serna said the changes are long overdue.

"To us, it is important since we have been here for a good while. I think it is good to see a remodeling because times have changed already," Serna said.

The city commission is scheduled to finalize the plan in August 2026.
