Authorities issue warning after McAllen child hospitalized from vaping on school bus
A 12-year-old boy was hospitalized after vaping a dangerous stimulant on a school bus in McAllen, according to police.
The incident happened the morning of April 22, 2026, as the bus arrived at IDEA Quest Academy. Police say another student shared a vape containing benzylpiperazine, a synthetic stimulant, with the boy.
Officers responding to the scene found the child unconscious and vomiting.
"It's quite alarming to us as law enforcement to find out this is happening on a school bus," McAllen Police spokesperson Sgt. John Saenz said.
The vape contained 50% benzylpiperazine, police said.
"Benzylpiperazine is a synthetic, or a man-made, stimulant. Think something like cocaine, amphetamines, something like crank or speed," Hidalgo County Health Authority Dr. Ivan Melendez said.
Melendez says the drug can push the body too far too fast. For a child, even a small amount can be dangerous.
"Imagine a cup of coffee times a thousand. It absolutely can cause tachycardia, palpitations, heart attacks, liver damage," Melendez said. "It would be like using three lemons to make lemonade in a pitcher or three lemons for a glass. These drugs will be much more toxic in lower dosages to small people and children.”
Officers tried using Narcan at the scene, but it had little to no effect, police said. The boy was taken to a hospital.
The student who police say provided the vape was detained and is now facing charges.
Investigators are trying to determine where the vape came from.
“That's the beginning of the investigation. The follow-up is determining the source of the product, where it came from, and how it ends up in the hands of the victim in this case," Saenz said.
Melendez says the case is a reminder that what may look harmless can turn serious fast.
"Vaping itself at any age has a lot of inherent toxicity, of course in children much more so," Melendez said.
IDEA Public Schools confirmed the incident happened at IDEA Quest Academy and says any disciplinary action will be addressed. Their statement can be read in full below:
