The Donna North Chiefs have a new head coach looking to end a 13-year playoff drought.
Matthew Moose is taking over a team that went 2-8 last season. He previously served as offensive coordinator at Brownsville Lopez, where he helped the team reach the playoffs for the first time in 7 years.
Players are already buying into the new system.
"He came in, he brought a whole new energy and culture to the program and the whole team has been buying in. We're making huge gains in the weight room this off season," senior quarterback Brandon Trevino said.
Senior defensive end Matt Rodriguez also spoke to the impact Moose has had.
"It's been amazing, he's taught us a lot working with him, he's really like a father figure taking care of his guys and really showing us love, what it is to be a champion," Rodriguez said.
The biggest change for the Chiefs is a new offensive scheme. Moose laid out his vision for the team.
"I want to score a lot of points. Run an up tempo offense that forces the defense to play vanilla. We also have some stuff on special teams where we're going to steal some possessions and flip the field. Everything in our program is earned not given and I tell them every single day you earn the right to be here," Head Coach Matthew Moose said.
The Chiefs are also moving into a new district, 16-5A, where they will face all Rio Grande Valley teams. The district includes McAllen, Mission and Rio Grande City teams, making it one of the toughest in the area.
Donna North opens the regular season against Porter. District play begins in week four against Rio Grande City, with a bye week following in week five.
The second half of the season includes matchups against Mission, Nikki Rowe, Palmview and a season finale against McAllen Memorial.
