Several events in Hidalgo County were canceled Saturday because of the rain.

One of the events was the Alamo Watermelon Festival. The grounds had damaged canopies and chairs, and guardrails were knocked over.

As strong winds and rain passed over the area, city leaders decided to cancel the event.

"All of a sudden, the wind started blowing, and tents started flying, and there was a lot of rain," J&R Tacos owner Jeronimo Ibarra said.

Ibarra was among the vendors planning to take part in the festival.

"I was surprised because I thought I was going to continue, but they canceled because of the damage," Ibarra said.

Ibarra says he lost money on supplies because of the cancelation.

"They are things that we can spend money on, and the food that I bought today isn't going to work, so the next event I have to buy new food," Ibarra said.

Rain left puddles and mud at the Alamo Sports Complex where the festival was going to take place. The storm also knocked out electricity, damaged the area and other equipment.

Acting Alamo City Manager Saul Solis said safety was their priority.

"The weather was really bad. It damaged some of the equipment that the bands were going to perform on, so for the safety of our community and the people who were going to attend, because of the actual wet grounds, we decided to cancel," Solis said.

Solis said the city didn't lose any money, and now they're working to bring performers back in a few months.

"Every band that was supposed to play is going to be rescheduled, to perform at our Freedom Bash, which will be on July 2," Solis said.

Ibarra says he plans to return and that a little rain won't stop him or his business.

"The rain came all of a sudden, and we were surprised. We are hard workers, and we are going to continue to move forward," Ibarra said.

Valley officials are urging residents to report damage done to their homes or businesses to the Texas Division of Emergency Management iSTAT survey.
