Two people are facing charges in connection with a scheme to bring marijuana into the local jail, according to the Cameron County Sheriff's Office.

The investigation started after detention staff found inmate Victor Manuel Castillo, 27, with suspected contraband following a visit from 23-year-old Alejandra Maria Guevara.

Staff field-tested the substance, and it came back positive for marijuana, according to a news release. Investigators reviewed surveillance footage and other evidence, which led to arrest warrants for both individuals.

Guevara was taken into custody at a residence in Brownsville. Castillo remains in custody at the Cameron County jail on possession charges.

Both Guevara and Castillo face charges of possessing a prohibited substance in a correctional facility, a third-degree felony.

“The Cameron County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to maintaining the safety and security of our correctional facilities, detention staff, and inmates,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “Individuals who attempt to introduce illegal drugs or other prohibited contraband into a Cameron County jail should understand that these incidents will be thoroughly investigated, and [those responsible] will be identified and held accountable.”
