Protesters gather at Congresswoman De La Cruz’s McAllen office over federal funding cuts
Several groups gathered outside Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz's office in McAllen on Friday to criticize her vote on what they call the "Big Ugly Bill."
Michelle Vallejo, senior advisor of the Latino Victory Texas Coalition, said the bill cut funding for food banks and affordable healthcare.
"One of the biggest issues is that Monica De La Cruz voted on the big ugly bill, and what this bill did was cut funding for access to food, so it is hurting our food banks," Vallejo said. "It cut access to affordable healthcare."
Vallejo previously ran against De La Cruz in a congressional race.
The coalition and other organizations said the bill has hurt Valley families.
Vianey Preciado, Texas state director of Poder Latinx, said families are struggling with high costs.
"Our families are not making enough money, and then we're burdened with a very high grocery or electricity cost," Preciado said. "So a majority of our household income is going to go towards paying that off, and then they are not going to have much more money left over."
Preciado said families are losing access to important resources while dealing with inflation.
The groups want voters to track how elected officials vote.
"As we get closer to the November election, the Latino vote here and the vote here in South Texas is extremely powerful, and I encourage everyone to get engaged," Vallejo said.
Channel 5 News reached out to De La Cruz about the claims. Her office sent the following statement in full:
"Congresswoman De La Cruz is delivering for South Texans. From fighting for the largest tax cuts in history, including no tax on tips, no tax on overtime, and no tax on seniors’ benefits, expanding access to affordable housing, and bringing home over $50 million to Hidalgo County to improve local infrastructure and invest in community projects, she is committed to helping more people achieve their American Dream. She has proven that under her leadership, South Texans will always have a seat at the table, and she will continue to fight for the results the Rio Grande Valley deserves.”
