A Thanksgiving night robbery has people in a Weslaco neighborhood on high alert.

Neighbors in Sienna Drive say their vigilance may have prevented an even bigger loss.

"Saw two men walking out with some equipment, and they had a door," neighbor Priscilla Luna said.

Luna's family lives on the street where the burglary happened. She says the home that was hit was under construction.

"When we got closer to the house, we noticed that they had broken through the door and took some items, unfortunately, they were stealing," Luna said.

After calling authorities, the family then called the construction company to tell them what happened.

"The doors were here in the middle; they grabbed them, put it inside. The neighbors came running, that was all the time they had. I believe they did this all this in six minutes," B3M Construction LLC Contractor Benigno Melendez said.

Melendez says two doors were stolen. He's still checking to see if anything else was taken.

"We believe they came through the back door, they knocked them open," Melendez said. "I kind of already fixed here, but that's how the neighbors found out, they heard the noise."

The Lunas weren't the only ones who saw what happened that night, others did too.

Luna says she's glad they all caught it when they did.

"They could have come back, they could have stolen more items and by the time you know, it would've been with nothing in there," Luna said.

Luna says this incident shows why their neighborhood watches out for each other.

"We all look out for one another, and we all have cameras, so we all see what's going on," Luna said. "Who knows what they could have done, and that's something that upsets us because our safety and our kids' safety is number one."

The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office is investigating what happened. The contractor is offering a $500 reward for information.

A fence now surrounds the house under construction, but Melendez says what really makes a difference is the relationship between builders and residents.

"Us, as builders, we need to work close with our neighbors, where we're building, with the community, to raise awareness of things like this," Melendez said.
