The boys golf state championship tournament takes place next week. The McAllen Memorial Mustangs are gearing up for another appearance.

Last week, the team won regionals for the first time since 2002.

"Smithson Valley has beat us at regionals countless times so and we haven't won regional since 2002, so it was great winning finally," said Mustangs junior golfer Thomas Ochoa, and who placed first at regionals.

It's the first time in program history that the team sweeps the podium. Thomas Ochoa placed first individually, Kai Tamez second, and Liam McGurk third.

"It's never been done. The regional tournament was a great exhibition of what they can do and to get first, second and third in any order is what our goal was and we achieved it," said McAllen Memorial head golf coach Celso Gonzales.

This is the team's fourth consecutive trip to state, placing fourth last year after the second day of the tournament was canceled due to weather.

This year, the team will be hoping they have what it takes to take home the state title.
