The Hidalgo County Courthouse will remain closed on Wednesday, Sept. 2, and Thursday, Sept. 3.

The courthouse was originally scheduled to reopen on Wednesday, but county officials announced on Tuesday that the closure has been extended.

"After meeting with engineers and reviewing the damage to the building, county officials determined that the courthouse should remain closed to the public until it is deemed safe to reopen," a news release stated. "Members of the judiciary, court staff and county employees will be permitted to enter the courthouse to conduct essential county business during the closure."

Officials are continuing to assess the damage done to the building after a suspected drunk driver crashed into the building late Sunday night.

Jesus Alaniz Jr. was identified as the driver. He remains hospitalized in critical condition and will face a DWI charge once he is released from the hospital.

"Jurors and members of the public who were scheduled to report to the courthouse on Wednesday or Thursday should not report to the building," the news release added. "County officials continue to coordinate with judicial leadership regarding scheduled hearings, jury proceedings and other court operations affected by the closure."
