The Hidalgo County Courthouse will be closed on Monday, Aug. 31, after a suspected drunk driver crashed into the building.

The Edinburg Police and Fire Department responded to the single-vehicle crash at around 11:35 p.m. Sunday at 100 North Closner Boulevard.

According to a city spokesperson, preliminary investigation revealed a BMW was traveling southbound on Closner Boulevard when the vehicle failed to stop and crashed directly into the front entrance of the courthouse.

The crash caused extensive structural damage to the building, according to the spokesperson.

Emergency personnel extracted the driver, who was transported to a local hospital where they remain in critical condition. No one else was inside the vehicle.

According to the spokesperson, investigators suspect alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the crash.

Due to the crash, the Hidalgo County Courthouse will be closed on Monday. County officials are conducting a preliminary structural assessment of the courthouse and evaluating the extent of the damage.

The courthouse will remain closed while officials determine when it will be safe to reopen the building, according to a news release.

Employees, jurors and members of the public who were scheduled to report to the courthouse on Monday should not report to the building.

The crash remains under investigation.
