Harlingen is spending more than $32,000 to fix a road its own sanitation trucks helped destroy.

The city stopped paving part of Los Ranchitos Road in 2024 because it sits on a private easement, but city garbage trucks kept using it.

"A lot of the damage that's done to these roads is because our trucks weigh up to 18 tons," Harlingen Public Works Director Ruth Treviño said. "So that heavy equipment going through these roads caused a lot of damage to these roads. So that's the reason why we took it to the commission for approval for repairs."

People in the area had been asking for the road to be fixed for some time, the city said.

Work is expected to start at the end of October and take about a week, weather permitting.
