The race for the Democratic Cameron County judge nomination just got more crowded with former sheriff Eric Garza throwing his hat into the ring.

On Monday, Garza confirmed to Channel 5 News he filed to run as Cameron County judge for the March 2026 Democratic primaries.

“For years, I’ve dedicated my work to serving the people of Cameron County—improving public services, supporting community safety, and helping strengthen the systems families rely on every day,” Garza said in a statement. “My experience in county operations and community-focused initiatives has given me a clear understanding of what our residents need and what our county can achieve with strong leadership.”

Garza served as Cameron County sheriff after winning the election in Nov. 2020. He lost the runoff race for the Democratic Cameron County Sheriff nomination to current sheriff Manuel Trevino in 2024.

“I am running for Cameron County Judge to bring accountability, fairness, and practical solutions to the office. My priority is simple: put the people of Cameron County first and ensure our resources are used to improve daily life for every family,” Garza said. “I would be honored to earn your support as we work toward a stronger, safer, and more efficient county government.”

Garza will be challenging current Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino Jr. and Port of Brownsville Chairman Steve Guerra for the Democratic nomination.

Whoever receives the Democratic nomination will face off against Mauro Garza, a businessman who is the only candidate who filed to run as a Republican.
