Former Brownsville ISD teacher pleads guilty to having improper relationship with a student
A former Rivera Early College High School teacher pleaded guilty to a charge of improper relationship between educator and student, according to court records.
Julio Ricardo Trujillo was arrested in May following an investigation by the Cameron County District Attorney's Office. He entered his guilty plea on Monday.
As previously reported, an affidavit alleged Trujillo had intercourse with a 19-year-old female student at least three times.
Also, as part of his plea deal, Trujillo will permanently relinquish his teaching license.
Trujillo was the head girls basketball coach at the high school and also a criminal justice system teacher with the CTE department.
Trujillo originally faced three counts of improper relationship with a student, but as part of his plea deal, two of those counts were dropped, according to court records.

Court records said the state is recommending Trujillo receive five years of deferred adjudication. If he completes those five years, the case could be formally dismissed by a judge and Trujillo will have no criminal conviction on his record.
The defense is also for no jail time for Trujillo, but the state is requesting 180 days in county jail, according to court records.
Trujillo is scheduled for sentencing on Jan. 14, 2026.
