A park in Donna remains closed days after vandals damaged basketball hoops

The damage is estimated to cost between $8,000 and $10,000.

According to the Donna Police Department, someone shattered the glass backboards of the basketball hoops at Plazita Park, located on Lissner Avenue.

Police say the incident happened sometime last weekend. A city employee discovered broken glass scattered across the court earlier this week.

"We're probably going to install a sky cop here during the night to monitor for a while," Donna Police Chief Gilbert Guerrero said. "We want to get these guys in jail where we want to find out who it is."

Police said this is the third time since October that the basketball hoops were vandalized. Police believe more than one person was involved, and the department is adding extra patrols in the area for the next two to three weeks.

The city installed the two basketball hoops last year. Officials are now waiting on new equipment for repairs and say the replacement hoops won't be glass.

The city hopes to reopen the park by the end of next week.

Police are asking the public for help identifying the people responsible. Those with any information on the suspects are urged to call the Donna Police Department at 956-464-4481
