Democrat James Talarico visited colonias in Donna during a trip to the Rio Grande Valley on Sunday.

"This is the wealthiest country in the world. Our neighbors should not be living in these conditions," Talarico said.

He's currently campaigning for the Senate seat currently held by John Cornyn.

Cornyn lost his bid for reelection in the Republican primary. Talarico will be up against Republican Ken Paxton on the November ballot. Whoever wins will take office next January.

Talarico focused on visiting Valley neighborhoods during his visit.

"We are visiting colonias that don't have access to basic services, clean water, paved streets, sewer systems. The colonia that we just visited recently installed street lights, but that was years of fighting for those street lights," Talarico said.

Talarico added that federal funding is needed to bridge the infrastructure gaps local officials have been unable to address.

The midterm general elections are in November.
