Death penalty trial underway for man accused of killing San Benito police officer
Cameron County, TX (KRGV) — Testimony continues Tuesday in the death penalty trial of Rogelio Martinez, who is accused of killing San Benito police Lt. Milton Resendez during a 2023 police chase.
The trial is taking place without cameras inside the courtroom. On the first day of testimony, jurors heard from witnesses and watched video from the pursuit as the state laid out the chase across Cameron County.

A park ranger testified that he stopped a truck for speeding on South Padre Island and that Martinez was inside. The ranger told jurors Martinez got out of the truck after commands, then became difficult and drove off in the truck.
Jurors also heard from a deputy constable, DPS troopers and Border Patrol. One witness testified that the chase reached about 100 miles an hour and another testified about hearing gunfire at different points of the pursuit.
During cross examination, the defense pressed some witnesses on whether they could actually see who was firing. The state says Martinez fired at officers and the defense says he did not.
