The Better Business Bureau is warning Rio Grande Valley residents about a scam targeting veterans and their families.

A McAllen resident received a letter and check claiming her husband was overpaid for VA benefits and owed money back.

The BBB said if you receive a letter, it is important to do research as scammers may use fake VA letterhead and logos to make it look real.

"The problem is consumers don't know who they are communicating with at the other end. We are free to give out information. We need to educate the people that they need to ask more questions over the phone or text message," BBB Serving the RGV President Hilda Martinez said.

The BBB said do not deposit a suspicious check, do not send money back to anyone who contacts you claiming you were overpaid and never provide any banking or social security information.

If you have already deposited a check, call your bank right away.
